The 70th Anniversary of the National Diet Library

The National Diet Library (NDL), founded in 1948, is the library that serves the research needs of the National Diet of Japan. It was established by the Diet Law and the National Diet Library Law. The NDL celebrates its 70th anniversary on June 5, 2018.

The collections held by NDL have changed dramatically over 70 years. The NDL has added various types of materials such as electronic materials, online publication, and websites to its traditional collections.
User environments have also changed. Our service began with on-site user services and expanded to remote user services such as remote copying services and creating databases, providing digitized contents on the internet. We have improved the user environment to enhance accessibility from anywhere in the world to the library materials and information we provide.
But our three main roles have not changed since our founding. Our roles are as follows :

1. Support to the Diet
2. Acquisition and preservation of materials and information
3. Providing the public with access to information resources

We will continue to play these roles by using the intellectual heritage collected by the NDL and continue to contribute to the development of a prosperous future.
