Introduction to the Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop at the National Library of Korea

By Yeongjo Yun, Librarian, National Library of Korea

I would like to introduce the Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop at the National Library of Korea!

The National Library of Korea has been conducting the Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop annually since 2005 for approximately 20 librarians working at overseas Korean studies libraries. The workshop aims to increase interest in the development of Korean studies and contribute to the spread of Korean culture, as well as enhance understanding of Korean culture.

The workshop has had 239 participants from 34 countries so far. This year, the 16th workshop is scheduled to be held at the National Library of Korea in Banpo-dong, Seoul from October 23 (Mon) to October 27 (Fri), 2023 for 4 nights and 5 days.

Overview of the 2022 Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop

The 2022 Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop was held at the National Library of Korea from October 17 (Mon) to October 21 (Fri) for 4 nights and 5 days. A total of 20 librarians from 6 countries participated in the workshop, which consisted of lectures, discussions, and tours.
The lectures focused on old and rare collections and library trends. Major topics included an introduction to the National Library of Korea in 2022, its issues and challenges, digitizing and collecting overseas Korea-related resources, printing in Korea, the classification of old Korean books, cataloging old collections, the Korean Old and Rare Collection Information System (KORCIS), and collecting, analyzing and applying library big data.
In the participant presentation session, 7 librarians from various institutions gave presentations about the unique features and programs of their Korean studies collections. Following the presentations, a discussion session provided an opportunity for participants to share the latest trends in Korean studies libraries.
During the tour and cultural exploration session, participants visited the National Library of Korea's main building and digital library, the Gyujanggak, the Seoul National University Library, and the National Museum of Korea. The detailed schedule for the 4-night, 5-day workshop is shown in the table below. Participants found the workshop informative in terms of networking with overseas Korean studies librarians and gaining insight into the latest trends. In particular, they appreciated the lecture on old and rare collections and expressed a desire to have an opportunity to practice cataloging old and rare collections in future workshops.

Plan for the 2023 Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop

The 2023 Overseas Korean Studies Librarian Workshop is scheduled to be held at the National Library of Korea from October 23 (Mon) to October 27 (Fri) for 4 nights and 5 days. Based on participant survey demand, the workshop plans to expand lectures on old and rare collections and provide opportunities for participants to practice cataloging old and rare collections.
In addition, the workshop period will be linked to the 60th (2023) National Library Contest Exhibition which is held annually in Korea, and participants who wish to do so can individually attend the event after arriving in Korea.
Applications for the 2023 Overseas Korean Studies workshop participation were received from March 17 to April 30, and participants were confirmed and notified in May.
This year's workshop lectures will focus on old and rare collections and digital humanities, with participant presentations and free discussions also planned. The tour locations will be determined based on participant demand. We hope to provide systematic information on Korean materials and opportunities to acquire professional knowledge for librarians working at major libraries overseas through this workshop.
Going forward, the National Library of Korea will continue to explore ways to provide ongoing information and support for overseas Korean studies librarians and make efforts to operate workshops where libraries around the world can share knowledge, information and experiences. We ask for the participation and interest of overseas Korean studies librarians.
