NDL Participation in IFLA/WLIC 2018

Founded in 1927, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. The IFLA is organized into more than forty Sections that are devoted to promoting awareness of a particular issue related to library services as well as a number of Strategic Programmes that are a source of information on topics such as preservation and conservation or copyright and other legal matters. There are currently 1,400 IFLA member organizations from 140 countries around the world.

The National Diet Library (NDL) first joined the IFLA as an associate member in 1966 and became a full member in 1976. NDL employees have attended the IFLA's annual conferences since 1967, participating in sessions sponsored by the National Libraries and other Sections as well as attending the annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL), which is held concurrently with the IFLA conference.

The 1986 conference was held in Tokyo, and the NDL participated in the Japan Organizing Committee together with the Japan Library Association, the National Council of Public Libraries, the Japan School Library Association, and others. The Chief Librarian of the NDL at the time served both as the vice-chairperson of the Organizing Committee and the head of the Executive Committee.

At present, there are ten NDL employees who serve either on standing committees or as corresponding members of Sections and contribute to management, information exchange, and other activities. Also, the NDL was designated the IFLA Core Activity on Preservation and Conservation (IFLA/PAC) Regional Centre for Asia in 1989 and continues to serve in that capacity. In Japan, the NDL promotes IFLA activities through both digital and printed media, translating into Japanese and making available on its website the IFLA guidelines and other information.

The IFLA's annual World Library and Information Congress: IFLA General Conference and Assembly (IFLA/WLIC) is held in a different country each year and serves as an opportunity to report on library activities as well as to share opinions and experiences while networking with fellow library professionals. The 2018 IFLA/WLIC was held August 24–30 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 12 NDL employees attended this event to discuss issues affecting libraries with colleagues from around the world and to deliver reports at various preconference events and official sessions. Summaries of these reports are available at the following links. We hope you will enjoy reading them.
