Temporary suspension of some online services
Due to system maintenance, patrons will not be able to log into NDL web services. Therefore, a portion of the NDL's online services will be unavailable from 18:00, December 27 (Fri.), 2024 to January 6 (Mon.), 2025, as described in the tables below, "Details of suspension of services for individual users" and "Details of suspension of services for institutional users".
The online services that will be suspended are limited to those requiring logging in. Search functions on NDL Search, etc. will be available during the suspension.

Functional restrictions on NDL Search due to system maintenance
Search functions on NDL Search will be available during the suspension, but the information on the Bibliographic Record page will not be displayed correctly.
In addition, from December 23 (Mon.) to January 6 (Mon.), Bibliographic Records in MARC format and MARC tag format data will not be outputted (this output will not be available from the “Web Japanese National Bibliography” or “Web NDL Catalog”).

Extension of expiry date of user information is not available
For those whose registered user information will expire during the suspension, we recommend that patrons extend the expiry date of their user registration before the suspension. For more information on who is eligible and how to extend the expiry date, please see the News on NDL Search.
Delays to providing materials
From December 21 (Sat.), the receiving of new materials will be suspended due to system maintenance.
Even after the restart of receiving operations, providing new materials is expected to be delayed until the end of January. Please confirm the material’s status using NDL Search. Newspapers on the open shelves in the Newspaper Reading Room in the Tokyo Main Library will be available as usual, and some newspapers such as national newspapers, etc. on open shelves in the General Collections Room in the Kansai-kan will be available as usual.
Postponement of service start date (from June 20, 2024)
The National Diet Library had planned to start the Public Transmission Service by Libraries or Similar Facilities, based on Article 31, Paragraph 2 of the Copyright Act (Act No. 48 of 1970), in June 2024. However, the Society for Administration of Remuneration for Public Transmission by Libraries or Similar Facilities (SARLIB), which manages the compensation for this service, has not yet made preparations for system development, etc. (*). Therefore, in accordance with Article 5 of the Rules for the Use of National Diet Library Materials (National Diet Library Rules No. 1 of 2022), we will postpone the start of the service.

Temporary Suspension of Some Online Services December 27, 2023, to January 4, 2024
NDL Online and NDL Search will be integrated and launched as a new NDL Search in January 2024. Due to the system switchover, a portion of the NDL's online services will be unavailable from 19:00, December 27 (Wed.), 2023 to January 4 (Thu.), 2024, as described in the tables below "Details of suspension of services for users (for individuals)" and "Details of suspension of services for institutional users".
The online services that will be suspended are limited to those requiring login. Search functions on NDL Online and the current NDL Search will be available during the suspension. However, information on holdings on the Bibliographic Record page of NDL Online cannot be viewed and "Failed to connect." will be displayed.

Delays to providing materials
From Dec. 19 (Sat.), 2020, providing some materials (new books and periodicals) will be delayed due to system maintenance. Please confirm the material’s status, using NDL online.

You will not be able to log in to NDL Online during the above period, and cannot utilize some services (adding to materials, adding to My List, and referring to your request history.).

Registered user information will expire three years after "the date of user registration", "the date of last entry to the library", or "the date of last login to NDL Online." You can confirm the expiration date of registered user information on the NDL Online.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, admission to the Tokyo Main Library will be limited to a maximum of 1000 visitors per day, and a reservation will be necessary to enter the library. However, patrons with a Registered User card will be allowed to enter the Tokyo Main Library without a reservation on weekdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Technical difficulties with the search engines on the websites of the National Diet Library and International Library of the Children's Literature
The search engines on the websites of the NDL and the ILCL have been experiencing technical difficulties since May 14, 2020 and are currently unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Search functionality for these sites is available at https://www.ndl.go.jp/en/result.html for the NDL website and at https://www.kodomo.go.jp/english/result.html for the ILCL website.
