Description
Because this was the origin point of the Oshu-kaido Road, was close to the wholesale district, and was the official residence of the Kanto gundai (a magistrate of Kanto region), it had many accomodations for travelers and Kujiyado (official accommodations for those who came to Edo for the purposes of trials of lawsuits), and so was bustling with people who came to Edo for lawsuits, business and tourism. The origin of the name is said to have been because there was a horse market, and a large number of bakuro (horse traders) who sold and treated cattle and horses lived here, or because the nearby Hatsunenobaba was under the management of the head horse dealers Takagi Genbe'e and Tomita Hanshichi.
