Born at Kamigyo in Kyoto city. In 1891, he graduated from the Medical College of the Imperial University and became an army surgeon. During the Sino-Japanese War, he served in the Hiroshima Army Occasional Hospital. In 1900, he received a doctorate in medicine. His paper was evaluated as pioneering research by the army medical community. In the following year, he was ordered to go to Germany to study but was ill and could not go. Later, after working for Juntendo Hospital, he became chief surgeon of Kagoshima City Hospital.
