An opera singer (soprano). In 1904 she graduated from the Tokyo Ongaku Gakko (later the Department of Music of the Tokyo University of the Arts). While a student, she had a role in the first opera concert by Japanese performers only, Orfeo ed Euridice. She joined the chorus team of the Imperial Theatre in 1911. In 1914 she moved to Europe and performed Madama Butterfly in London. She also performed the same role in the Metropolitan Opera House. She was the first internationally successful Japanese prima donna.
