He took over his family business as a military accessories dealer and upon the opening of Yokohama port he started to sell Western imports. When the Boshin war broke out, he supplied military goods to the Imperial forces, but later his business went bankrupt and he instead started a trading business. In 1876, he and his half-brother Toyo established Morimura-gumi and started trading with the U.S. His company sold daily tableware and as it expanded, he established another company, Nihon Toki Gome Gaisha (later Noritake), in 1904. He also was actively engaged in social and education activities and established the Morimura Homekai foundation in 1901 and opened a private school, Minami Takanawa elementary school and kindergarten, in his house in 1910. In 1915 he was awarded the title of danshaku (baron) for his accomplishments.
