Calligrapher. He served the Nabeshima family and went to Edo at the age of 19 to learn calligraphy from YAMAUCHI Kosetsu. He went to Qing China in 1882 and studied under Pan Cun, and when he returned to Japan in 1884, he brought back rubbings from the Han and Six Dynasties periods. He was a proficient calligrapher in the tensho-tai (seal script), reisho-tai (clerical script), kaisho-tai (block), gyosho-tai (semi-cursive) and sosho-tai (cursive) styles. One of the Sanpitsu (three famous calligraphers) of the Meiji period.
