Description

The first international Japanese female track and field athlete. Won first place in the long jump at the 2nd Junior High School Competition in 1923. Graduated from Nikaido Gymnastic Private School (later Japan Women’s College of Physical Education). While working at Osaka Mainichi Newspaper as a sports reporter, she won the most individual points at the 2nd Women’s World Games in 1926. She was the only Japanese woman to participate in the 9th Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928. She placed second in the 800-m race and became the first Japanese women to win an Olympic medal. She contributed to bringing Japanese women’s sports to the world, organizing the Japanese Women’s Sports Federation ahead of her participation in the Olympics.
