Description

Lord of the Hirado domain, statesman and tea master. In 1849, he was adopted by his uncle MATSURA Terasu, the lord of the domain, and in 1858, he became the 12th lord of the domain. As the feudal lord, he prepared coastal defenses and promoted austerity and encouragement of new industry. During the Boshin War, he took part in the conquest of Oshu, and after that he successively held posts as the governor of Hirado domain, the magistrate of the Utakai Hajime (New Year’s poetry reading) and the general affairs official of the Ministry of the Imperial Household. He became an earl in 1884, and was a member of the House of Peers from 1890 to 1908. He was the head of the Chinshin-ha (group) of the Sekishu school of tea ceremony.
