Doctor and scholar of Western medicine. Learned from Philipp Franz von Siebold in Nagasaki, then practiced medicine in Edo from 1828. In 1843, he became a court physician of the Nabeshima domain, and in 1849 he was the first doctor in Japan to provide cowpox inoculations. In 1858, he established the Otamagaike Vaccination Center in Edo, and became the first Western medicine court doctor in the Tokugawa Shogunate. Appointed as a director of a vaccination center(institute of Western medicine) which was transferred to the Tokugawa Shogunate. Established Shosendo in Edo.
