Geologist and mineralogist. After graduating from the Tokyo Imperial University Department of Geology in 1887, he engaged in geological surveys at the Hokkaido Government Office and then studied abroad in Germany. While studying paleontology, the assistant professor in charge of mineralogy suddenly passed away, so he changed his major and studied mineralogy. In 1895, he became an assistant professor, and the following year he became a professor. He did surveys in Hokkaido and Sakhalin while lecturing on mineralogy. He served as chairman of the Geological Society of Tokyo (later the Geological Society of Japan) and president of the Tokyo Geological Society.
