Doctor, scholar of Western medicine, and Imperial Army surgeon. Born in 1862, he was the eldest son of HAYASHI Dokai, a court physician. He studied in the Netherlands with ITO Genpaku. He returned to Japan due to the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate, moved to Sunpu, and became the director of the Shizuoka domain hospital. In 1871, he joined the Imperial Army and later took part in the Seinan War, and in 1879 became the second Chief Surgeon General. In 1882, he died while attending Prince Taruhito in Paris.
