Interfacility Requests (Browse Kansai-kan materials at the Tokyo Main Library)
Interfacility request is available when you need to browse materials which are only held in the Kansai-kan at the Tokyo Main Library. Please be aware that materials held in the International Library of Children's Literature are not available at the Tokyo Main Library.
Before Making a Request
Have you already registered as user?
Interfacility request is available only to official registered users and simple registered users. Simple registered users have to upgrade your status to official registered users before browsing the requested materials (If you bring identification documents, the official registration will be completed on the spot).

Do you know about other services?
Certain types of materials are available without making an interfacility request.
- If you already know the specific part of a material (i.e., the title of the article and the exact page numbers) you would like to copy, you can request remote photoduplication service via NDL Search and receive photocopies by courier or postal mail without visiting the library.
- Some foreign periodicals are available on e-Journal/e-Book.
- You can browse digitized materials on the National Diet Library Digital Collections.
Materials Available via Interfacility Request
Interfacility request is available for those types of materials listed below:
- Foreign periodicals
- Japanese doctoral dissertations
- Scientific research reports under grants from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
- Standards
- Patents of foreign countries
- Technical reports
- Materials related to Asia
Materials listed below are not suitable for transportation to the Tokyo Main Library.
- Japanese periodicals
- CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, or other electronic media
- Materials on open shelves
- Materials held in the Tokyo Main Library or the International Library of Children's Literature
- Materials that have been digitized
- Loose-leaf and other materials that would be easily scattered
- Damaged or deteriorating materials which may be damaged during transportation
How to Request
You can make an interfacility request both at the Kansai-kan Material Counter in the Tokyo Main Library, and via NDL Search on the Internet. If you make a request at the counter, you can choose an earlier date for browsing than when making a request online.
Make a Request at the Kansai-kan Material Counter
- Application Location: The Kansai-kan Material Counter in the Annex Building at the Tokyo Main Library.
- Application Time: 9:30 - 18:30 (Closed at 16:30 on Saturdays)
- Limitation: Up to five different materials can be requested at one time
- Browsing Period: Over three continuous business days *The browsing period should start no earlier than three business days from the date of application.
- Notes
- There is a limitation on the number of people per browsing day. Please understand that some browsing periods might not be available due to others' requests.
- We cannot accept requests to add or change requested materials.
- We cannot accept additional interfacility requests until your current requests are cancelled or have expired. Also, we cannot accept requests via NDL Search at the same time.
- We reserve the right to cancel a request even after it has been accepted if the status or condition of the requested materials warrants doing so. In such a case, we will call you no later than the day before your browsing period begins.
Request via NDL Search
- Limitation: Up to five different materials can be requested at one time
- Browsing Period: Over three continuous business days *The browsing period should start no earlier than six business days and no later than sixteen business days from the date of application.
- How to make a request: Please refer to "7-2 Interfacility request for browsing" in the help section of NDL Search.
- Notes
- An email address which is able to receive email from ndl.go.jp has to be registered to your user information.
- There is a limitation on the number of people per browsing day. Please understand that some browsing periods might not be available due to others' requests.
- We cannot accept requests to add or change requested materials.
- We cannot accept additional interfacility requests until your current requests are cancelled or have expired. Also, we cannot accept requests at the Kansai-kan Material Counter at the same time.
- We reserve the right to cancel a request even after it has been accepted if the status or condition of the requested materials warrants doing so. In such a case, we will notify you by email no later than the day before your browsing period begins.
- We cannot accept the request if the information in the form is incomplete.
- You can review the status of your current requests at "Request status" in NDL Search from three business days before your browsing period starts.
Using Kansai-kan Materials
- You can pick up Kansai-kan materials which you requested at the Kansai-kan Material Counter in the Annex Building at the Tokyo Main Library.
- The browsing period cannot be extended.
- Photoduplication of materials is subject to the terms of Japan's Copyright Act and the condition of the materials.
