A Western-style painter. Studied Japanese-style painting under Kawabata Gyokusho and later switched to Western-style painting and studied under Soyama Sachihiko. Despite the influence of the Gaiko-ha artists like Kuroda Seiki, he gradually leaned towards romanticism and presented Cho (Butterfly) and others. He studied in Europe from 1905 to 1909. A professor at the Tokyo Geijutsu Gakko (later Tokyo University of the Arts). A member of the Imperial Art Academy and one of the Imperial Household Artists. Awarded the Order of Culture in 1937.
