Description

Woodblock painter. The son of a vassal of the Edo Shogunate. He studied Western-style painting under Charles Wirgman and photography under Shimooka Renjo. Later, he also studied Japanese-style painting under Kawanabe Kyosa and Shibata Zeshin. Beginning in 1876, he adopted Western-style techniques of and produced Kosen-ga that illustrated landscapes of Tokyo in the Bunmei Kaika (cultural modernization) period. From around 1883, he switched to cartoons and illustrations and published political caricatures in the magazine Marumaru Chimbun. The landscape woodblock painter, Inoue Yasuji, studied under him.
