Description

Poet. The second daughter of Count YANAGIWARA Sakimitsu. She became KITAOJI Yorimitsu’s adopted daughter and entered the Peeresses’ School in 1898. She married KITAOJI Suketake in 1900, but later divorced him. Graduated from Toyo Eiwa Jogakko (Girls' School) in 1910. While studying, she joined a tanka poetry club, Takekashiwa-kai, whose leader was SASAKI Nobutsuna. She married ITO Denemon, a coal mining magnate in the Kyushu region, in 1911, but later eloped with the socialist MIYAZAKI Ryusuke in 1921. This event caused a public uproar and was known as the “Byakuren Incident”. After the end of World War II, she became a peace activist. She was a cousin of Emperor Taisho.
