2021-11-4 November 4, 2021: Preserving, Sharing, and Using Records of Earthquakes—the FY2020 Great East Japan Earthquake Archive Symposium to be held on January 10, 2022

The National Diet Library and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science at Tohoku University (external link) will cosponsor a symposium on the Great East Japan Earthquake Archive to be held Monday, January 10, 2022, a national holiday in Japan.

Japan has seen a great variety of initiatives for creating archives to preserve and convey records of earthquakes. This has led to anticipation that the memories of and lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake will be passed on to future generations and prove useful in reconstruction efforts as well as in planning future disaster prevention and mitigation measures.

The upcoming symposium will spotlight grass-root efforts in the affected communities to preserve and utilize disaster records, highlight examples of the construction and utilization of archives in Nagano and Gifu Prefectures, and feature a discussion by the speakers on promoting utilization of earthquake archives. For details, please see the Events page on the National Diet Library Great East Japan Earthquake Archive website.
