Epilogue
This exhibition introduces the emergence of confectionery in Japanese literature, the influence of Chinese and European food culture, and the establishment and subsequent development of wagashi as it is known today, from materials in our collection.
Since ancient times, people who have loved confectionery have written about it in various literary works. It is not unrelated to this history that many of the designs and names of wagashi invented in the Edo period were inspired by classical literature. Stories in which wagashi are personified were created from the Edo period onwards, which also suggests that the confectionery described was widely known and loved during that period.
Nowadays, wagashi has come to be appreciated overseas for its beauty and taste. Through this exhibition, we hope that you will be able to taste the world of wagashi, which has developed in its own way while incorporating foreign food cultures.
