2022-11-17 Connecting disaster records to the Next Generation - the FY2022 Great East Japan Earthquake Archive Symposium to be held on January 9, 2023

The National Diet Library and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science at Tohoku University (IRIDeS) [external link] will cosponsor a symposium on the Great East Japan Earthquake Archive to be held Monday, January 9, 2023, a national holiday in Japan.

Eleven years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. It is becoming increasingly important to pass on the experiences and lessons from the disaster and to keep them alive for the future.

The upcoming symposium will discuss the significance of building archives and organisations, and current efforts to do so. Reports will be given by Miyako City in Iwate Prefecture, which is currently building an earthquake archive, and the Reconstruction Agency, which is responsible for passing on lessons learned.

In addition, the National Diet Library will report on the history and current development of the National Diet Library Great East Japan Earthquake Archive (HINAGIKU), and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University will review the activities of the Michinoku-Shinrokuden [external link].
